Teaching Poetry To 3rd Graders

This English unit addresses common poetic devices such as sound play, word play and imagery and explores how these may be applied to narrative poetry.

Three different ways to teach poetry in 2nd through 5th grade classrooms. I use the mentor texts The Important Book and Love That Dog.

These are all considered parts of poems. The first comes from a nursery rhyme, the second is from William Henley, and the third comes from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. But what is poetry? And why should we care about it?
